Dyrsku’n – the Seljord Country Show

– cattle, colours and crafts

Annually since 1866

Experience three days of culture and crafts, buying and selling, people and animals, exhibits and demonstrations, in the greatest showground in the country: the Dyrsku’n Showground in the heart of Telemark.

The Public Festival
The Seljord Country Show is also essential to local culture and living traditions. There is street theatre with local actors; songs and music can be heard throughout the show’s numerous yards and byways; and in the huts and cabins you can encounter old Telemark traditions in crafts and cooking.

The Cattle Show
It started more than 140 years ago, with a public grant of 6,000 kroner and the building of the large showground stables. Today the Seljord Country Show is regarded as the foremost venue for cattle owners from the entire southern part of Norway. Here horses, cows and goats compete for prestigious prizes; there are daily shows and demonstrations of the finest farm animals in the country; and in the large Barn children and adults can experience all the animals at close range.

The Arts and Crafts Exhibition
The exhibition is the most extensive competition of handicrafts in the country, and the most prominent craftsmen and -women in the fields of textiles, wood work, knives and rose painting are represented. There are also participants from the other Nordic countries. Obtaining a first prize at Dyrsku’n is regarded as a highly prestigious achievement, and even though tradition is important, the exhibition also awards a separate innovation prize in order to encourage experimentation.

Demonstrations of Traditional Crafts
In the old logged buildings and in the numerous stands and other nooks and crannies of the bustling showground, a wide variety of craftsmen are constantly at work. You can witness smiths forging, cheese and butter making, weaving, baking and spinning. You will meet the farrier and the carpenter with his broad axe, the dairymaid and the traditional flatbread maker; the bakstekone. In addition, there are plenty of tastes to try, from herbs and freshwater fish, to homemade bread and smoked meats. The «green» area at the showground is an oasis which offers peace and quiet, perhaps accompanied by a cup of strong «lumberjack's» coffee.

The Trade Exhibition
For three days in September, all roads lead to the showground in Seljord, where 80,000 visitors come to see what 550 exhibitors have to offer.

Here you will find almost anything that money can buy – from the very latest in agricultural machinery to old clocks, sports gear and ecological food (much of the latter from small-scale producers). And trade is brisk: at Dyrsku’n those who save the penny are happy to spend the pound!

The interest of renting the grounds is constantly growing so the last years we have not been able to accept as many exhibitors as we would have liked. However we are planning to expand to make the The Seljord Country Show even better.

If you are interested in renting the grounds, please contact us for further information – we will do our best to satisfy your particular needs.
